along the Pilgrim Way in Spain
Join Judy Foot and Alison de
Candole for a nine-day (eight-night) tour of the second part of the Camino de
Santiago de Compostela.

Saturday 21 September 2002
We meet in Burgos at our hotel, the El Cid, arriving in good time
to explore the Cathedral and network of old streets that surround it. In the
evening, after an introductory talk to the week ahead, we walk to a nearby
restaurant for dinner to enjoy a typical Castilian meal. (D)
Sunday 22 September
Just outside Burgos, we walk
along the Camino over the chalky Meseta from Hontanas to Castrojeriz for lunch
(10kms). In the afternoon after a short
walk (6kms), we visit the beautiful Romanesque church at Fromista before
arriving at our hotel in the Monastery of San Zoilo at Carrion de los
Condes. (B,L,D)
Monday 24 September
We start today with a short
walk to blow away the cobwebs before travelling on to Leon. Our hotel is in the centre near the Cathedral
which is famous for its stained glass.
Lunch can be found in any of the dozens of bars and cafes in the
mediaeval streets near the Cathedral.
Afterwards a visit to the Basilica of San Isidoro and its Museum which
houses the Royal Pantheon must not be missed.
We eat in a restaurant that evening near the hotel. (B,D)
Tuesday 25 September 2002
The coach takes us to the
beginning of our walk at Hopital de Orbigo where, having crossed the famous
long bridge, we head for the town of Astorga (12kms). We then have time to visit the Bishop’s Palace, shop at the
market and have lunch before going on to the pilgrim community of Rabanal del
Camino where we stay the night at the Posada Gaspar. (B, D)
Wednesday 25 September 2002
After breakfast, we visit the Refugio
Gucelmo (pilgrim refuge) which is run by the Confraternity of St James in
London. Our coach then takes us to the
Cruz de Ferro (1504m) which stands on a huge pile of stones, each one left by a
pilgrim as they pass – perhaps bring your own with you! We walk from here to Acebo (6kms) where we
have lunch before walking on to Molinaseca (6kms) where we spend the night.
(B,L,D)
Thursday 26 September 2002
After a short coach journey, we
walk through vineyards and orchards to Villafrance del Bierzo, one of the most
attractive towns on the Camino (13kms) and we have time to look around the town
and have lunch before travelling up to the tiny mountain village of O Cebreiro
where the miracle of the Chalice occurred. We stay at the Hospederia San
Giraldo de Aurillac which is run by the family of the late Don Elias Valina San
Pedro who devoted his life to the Camino and the practical and academic aspects
of the Pilgrimage. We eat together in
the Comedor of the hotel (B,D)
Friday 27 September 2002
We leave O Cebreiro by coach
then walk the Camino downhill (6 kms) to Triacastello where we can find a good
lunch. We travel on via Samos and its
huge Benedictine monastery then walk the Galician countryside to Portomarin
(8kms) where we stay at the Pousada. (B,D)
Saturday 28 September 2002
By coach to Ventas de Naron
where we walk the Camino past ancient wayside crosses and tiny hamlets to lunch
(8kms). In the afternoon we walk
through eucalyptus and oak woodland (8kms) before meeting the coach to drive to
our destination – Santiago de Compostela. We walk the last hundred yards into
the Plaza de Obradoiro where the Cathedral and our hotel, the Parador de los
Reyes Catolicos stand. We dine that
evening in mediaeval splendour at the Parador. (B,D)
